Rotaldo recounts a harrowing encounter with the ghostly ship accompanied by mysterious voices and cannon fire, which preceded his barque's near-sinking. When a stranger vessel approaches, Paul Jones dismisses supernatural warnings and vows to pursue it relentlessly, deriding superstition while preparing his well-armed ship for potential combat.
