# The Boy Soldier; or, Garibaldi's Young Captain
This penny dreadful serial recounts a school rebellion inspired by Garibaldi's Italian campaign. At Bromley Hall Academy, students led by Frank Ford stage a dramatic uprising against the tyrannical headmaster, Reverend Jonathan Gravestones, protesting starvation rations, theft of pocket money, and refusal of holidays. The conflict escalates into the "Great Battle at Bromley Hall," with Frank's band of young "Garibaldians"—about twenty rebels—barricading themselves with desks and benches against the master, tutors, and informer Joel Flint. The revolutionaries shout "Liberty or Death" and fight with rulers, coal, and improvised weapons. After seizing a coal cupboard and pelting their assailants with coal dust and lumps, the students force the master to retreat in humiliation—coal-blackened and battered. The narrative celebrates the victory of youth and rebellion over institutional tyranny, drawing a sympathetic parallel to contemporary Italian independence struggles.
