The Lights o' Gotham; or, The Gilded Villain

Royal, Ralph · 1894

# Catalog Note

The Lights o' Gotham; or, The Gilded Villain is a serialized urban melodrama by Ralph Royal appearing in this December 1894 issue of the Log Cabin Library (No. 302).

The narrative opens in a decrepit New York tenement where John Baxter's wife Emily dies of consumption amid absolute destitution. Desperate and driven to despair by prolonged unemployment, Baxter prepares to hang himself but is stopped by Tom, a drunken vagrant who persuades him that suicide is cowardly. Reversing his resolve, Baxter instead vows vengeance against society. He rushes toward Wall Street, impelled by impulse to obtain money by any means necessary.

Meanwhile Emily, abandoned and dying, experiences a transcendent vision as her consciousness fades. Baxter returns with gold coins, which Emily recognizes as blood-stained before expiring. The narrative reveals Baxter has committed a crime—the text indicates his passage past the Sub-Treasury building and an approaching figure, though the OCR degrades at this critical juncture, obscuring the exact nature of his transgression.
