This cloth-bound cover design by Charles Dana Gibson introduces Richard Harding Davis's short-story collection centering on Courtlandt Van Bibber, a genial New York society bachelor. Gibson's composition is spare and confident: the title lettered in Gothic script sits within an oval cartouche framed by laurel sprays and ornate scrollwork, all blind-stamped in dark ink against steel-blue fabric.
