C. D. Gibson

Flagg, James Montgomery, 1877-1960, artist; Bain News Service, publisher · c. 1915

James Montgomery Flagg—himself a Life contributor and future creator of the iconic Uncle Sam recruiting poster—here turns his pen on colleague Charles Dana Gibson, the magazine's reigning celebrity illustrator. The caricature, rendered in spare pencil strokes, presents Gibson in sharp right-facing profile: a broad, nearly bald dome, strong jutting jaw, and a loosely knotted cravat suggested by a few economical lines. No caption survives, but none is needed; the exaggerated cranium flatters Gibson's reputation as a titan of graphic intelligence. Flagg signs twice—once in flowing script at lower left, once in the catalog header—claiming the work with characteristic bravado. The drawing carries no ethnic caricature. It is pure collegial ribbing between two commercially successful illustrators who shared both a masthead and a taste for social theater.
