Enter 1905

Hamilton, Grant E., artist · Grant Hamilton, Puck, December 28, 1904

A plump, rosy cherub—the New Year 1905, a star bearing that number blazing from his curls—rides a great winged cornucopia through a moonlit sky above a winter cityscape. He grips a long wand like a charioteer's whip, urging the horn of plenty onward; behind him it brims with grapes, oranges, wheat sheaves, and other farm produce above a label reading PROSPERITY. The caption beneath reads simply Enter 1905. Hamilton's allegory is optimistic but pointed: the cornucopia's abundance signals Republican confidence after Roosevelt's landslide victory that November. Prosperity here is not accidental—it arrives steered, actively driven into the new year by a guiding hand, implicitly vindicating protectionist policy and the party that championed it.
