Portrait of Thomas Nast, c. 1860–1865

This studio photograph by Mathew Brady—America's preeminent Civil War portraitist—shows a young Thomas Nast in three-quarter profile, seated beside a draped armchair. He wears a dark frock coat, his dark hair swept long, a goatee and mustache marking his face. The image is a glass-plate negative, its cracked and scratched surface visible around the edges, lending the portrait a fragile, archival presence. Nast was in his early twenties here, already contributing to Harper's Weekly, the illustrated journal where he would spend two decades reshaping American political life through pen and ink rather than the lens.
