This double-page wood engraving—one of Nast's early Harper's Weekly spreads before his overtly political period—documents the Arion Society's grand masquerade ball at New York's Academy of Music on March 27, 1867. The Arion was a prominent German-American choral and social organization, and the image reflects the cultural pride of New York's large German immigrant community.
