Christmas Eve
Nast, Thomas, 1840-1902, artist · Thomas Nast, 1889. Wood engraving.
Two laurel wreaths frame a nation divided by war and distance. On the left, a woman kneels at a candlelit window beside children sleeping in a four-poster bed—the home front holding vigil. On the right, a bearded Union soldier sits alone at a campfire, rifle across his knee, reading what appears to be a letter from home. Between them, the two circles nearly touch but do not meet. At the arch above, 'CHRISTMAS EVE' glows in radiant block letters while ghost-images of Santa's sleigh float at the margins. The composition's emotional argument is simple and devastating: the soldier and his family share the same holy night but cannot share the same room. Nast, himself an immigrant who supported the Union cause ardently, made this image of longing his seasonal signature—the holiday as measure of what war costs ordinary families.
