Νέος Αριστοφάνης (The New Aristophanes)

This Greek lithograph satirizes Balkan and European power politics through caricature and allegorical costume. A Serbian figure (left, in green military dress) gestures dramatically toward political figures including Bismarck, whose oversized head dominates the right. The print employs the tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson—exaggerated physiognomy, theatrical staging, and grotesque caricature—to mock nationalist ambitions and great-power diplomacy. The work descends from 19th-century European print satire, using exaggerated features and hierarchical composition to ridicule actors in imperial politics. Such imagery was common to the era and participated in a visual language that would eventually seed the comic strip's narrative and graphic conventions.
