A Consultation

Three physicians crowd the foreground in urgent, conspiratorial huddle — one in blue gesturing sharply, one in red receiving the argument, a third in green turning away with a skeptical squint. In the background a woman attends the bedridden patient whose fate these men are debating. The title A Consultation is lettered below. This is a coloured lithograph by C. J. Winter reproducing a design by Thomas Rowlandson (1757–1827), England's supreme caricaturist of bodily comedy. Rowlandson's figures exaggerate bulk, jowl, and posture to expose professional vanity and negligence — a class critique in which learned men perform authority while the sick person waits. This tradition of sequential satirical prints, running from Hogarth through Gillray and Rowlandson to Daumier's lithographed series, is the direct ancestor of the comic strip: recurring character types, physical exaggeration as social argument, and narrative compressed into a single charged image.
