The Elements of Drawing: Colour, Form, Space, Order, Drawing

Five hand-coloured vignettes surround a central scene set outside a Drawing Academy, each labelling a principle of art instruction — Colour, Form, Space, Order, Drawing — with comic figures enacting each concept. The central oval shows a boy hauling a cart past a shopfront crowded with onlookers; the surrounding scenes include a rotund figure waddling through a landscape (Space) and a reclining dandy sketching (Form). Cruikshank's etching line is nimble and precise, each vignette functioning as a self-contained gag-panel. This page-of-panels structure — discrete captioned images arranged on a single sheet — sits squarely in the tradition of the German Bilderbogen and the English illustrated broadside, the direct formal ancestor of the comic strip. Cruikshank himself would later produce The Bottle (1847), a sequence of narrative plates widely cited as proto-comics storytelling.
