A Doctor Advising a Poor Patient

Robert Browning · 1830

This etching after Robert Browning depicts a well-dressed physician dispensing medical advice to a ragged, malnourished man—advice wholly disconnected from the patient's actual circumstances. The doctor recommends rest, carriage rides, and country air; the patient lacks food and shelter. The print participates in a long tradition of social satire tracing back through Hogarth and Gillray, using caricature to expose class blindness and professional pomposity. The exaggerated features and ragged costume mark the poor man as a stock figure of period satire, reflecting contemporary attitudes even as the image critiques medical indifference to poverty. Such satirical prints, distributed as affordable engravings, established visual language later adopted by comic strips and sequential narrative art.
