A Minister's Assurance

This Dutch wood engraving depicts a street encounter between two ministers and a common soldier. One official, gesturing reassuringly, tells the enlisted man: "Don't worry—we'll make sure you're properly supported; you can count on us for a minister." The soldier's deadpan reply—"Oh, I'm already fine as I am"—delivers the satirical punch. The print mocks ministerial promises to working-class constituents with patronizing condescension. This work exemplifies the European tradition of political caricature descended from Hogarth and Gillray, where exaggerated physiognomy, class contrast, and dialogue balloons expose hypocrisy. Such popular engravings, distributed as single sheets and in periodicals, formed the direct precursor to modern comic strip narrative.
