De Nieuwe Stoom-Balance (The New Steam Balance)

· 1834

This Dutch satirical engraving lampoons a commercial fraud scheme involving fraudulent weighing. The scene depicts gentlemen in top hats gathered around an elaborate balance scale—labeled "Stoom-Balance"—while workmen on the left operate the rigged mechanism. The print mocks both the swindlers' pretense and their victims' gullibility. The composition draws from the Northern European tradition of political and commercial satire, where Hogarth's narrative scenes and Gillray's grotesquerie gave way to prints targeting specific scandals and scoundrels. Hand-colored engraving was the dominant medium for such satirical broadsides in the 1830s, before lithography displaced it. The image exposes class complicity: respectable merchants and possibly officials stand accused of deliberate deception against ordinary traders, a common theme in popular prints of the commercial age.
