A military officer on the left holds severed heads of nobles, while three clergymen in black coats—their dialogue floating above in ribbons—argue among themselves. A small dog gnaws a bone below, indifferent to the chaos. The print employs the crude physiognomic caricature common to Northern European satirical engravings of the 1790s, where exaggerated features signify moral and social degradation. Part of the long tradition from Hogarth through the Bilderbogen picture-sheets, such prints functioned as political commentary distributed cheaply to a growing public. This image captures the era's violent upheaval of old hierarchies—and its popular graphic mockery.
