Alliantie (Alliance)

This Dutch etching depicts two male figures in an embrace, labeled simply "Alliantie"—a political commentary on international relations during the revolutionary era. The figure on the left wears a bicorne hat and formal coat; the figure on the right sports a plumed hat and military garb. The print employs the engraving tradition of Northern European satirists to criticize diplomatic alliances through caricature of dress, posture, and physiognomy. Such prints descended from Hogarth's moral narratives and Gillray's grotesque commentary, using exaggerated anatomy and costume to ridicule politics and statecraft. This work participates in the centuries-long visual culture of political satire—from Reformation broadsheets through eighteenth-century prints to nineteenth-century lithographs—establishing conventions that would eventually influence comic art. The specificity of national caricature marks the era's embedded prejudices about identity and power.
