De Poëtebeurs (The Poets' Exchange)

This Dutch satirical engraving mocks the public craze for cheap political verses and prints during the War of Austrian Succession. A street scene shows vendors and crowds trading, buying, and reading broadside poetry—the mass-produced satirical literature that fueled popular political discourse in eighteenth-century Amsterdam. The composition recalls Hogarth's crowded moral scenes, capturing a moment when woodcut and engraved broadsheets were the primary vehicles for political commentary and popular entertainment. The print itself participates in the very culture it satirizes: the accompanying text sprawls across the page in dense Dutch verse, mimicking the format of the very peddled poems shown in the image. This work documents the birth of print satire as a democratic medium.
