This Dutch engraving documents the speculative bubble and crash of 1720, when European stock markets collapsed. The central panel shows frenzied trading in a public square; surrounding vignettes depict maritime commerce, rural scenes, and allegorical figures representing Fortune and Folly. The lower register carries explanatory text in Dutch verse.

The print belongs to the Northern European tradition of satirical engravings that preceded modern cartooning—a lineage running through Hogarth, Gillray, and later Daumier. Here, financial chaos becomes visual spectacle through dense composition and moral commentary. Rather than individual caricature, the artist uses crowded scenes and symbolic emblems to ridicule collective human greed and the era's newly volatile markets. This visual language of social satire would migrate directly into 19th-century comics and eventually comic strips.
