This Dutch engraving presents a crowded allegorical scene weighing the scales of warfare against peace. A massive balance dominates the composition, with armed soldiers and the machinery of war piled on one side and civic prosperity, trade, and family life on the other. Figures throughout engage in violence, commerce, revelry, and suffering—a visual argument about the costs of conflict.

The print descends from Renaissance emblem traditions and Northern European broadsheet satire. Its dense, didactic composition—layered with labeled figures and moral commentary in accompanying text—prefigures the narrative density of later Hogarth and Gillray satirical prints. The etching technique allowed fine detail and wide distribution. Such political-allegorical woodcuts and engravings established the visual language and sequential storytelling that would eventually structure the comic strip: multiple episodes, caricatured types, legible moral positions, and text-image integration to encode argument as entertainment.
