Expresse Brieve uyt Plutoos-Ryck [Express Letter from Pluto's Kingdom]

· 1708

This Dutch broadside satirizes French military defeat at Oudenaarde through a mock letter from Pluto's underworld kingdom. The letterpress text, printed in two columns with verse dialogue, mocks the French commander and court through classical allegory—a common device in Northern European political prints of the War of Spanish Succession era. Such illustrated broadsides, combining typography with woodcut or engraved imagery, circulated widely among literate urban audiences as disposable political commentary. This tradition of topical satire through popular prints directly preceded the illustrated newspapers and comic periodicals of the nineteenth century, establishing the commercial and visual grammar of sequential art commentary on power and conflict.
