The Great European War Ballet: On the Aim of the Distressed Christendom

This Dutch broadside combines densely printed Dutch verse with woodcut illustration to satirize peace negotiations during the Thirty Years' War. The text, organized in numbered stanzas, addresses the Dolphin of Vranckrijck (France) and European powers locked in religious and dynastic conflict. Such textbladen—printed sheets mixing moral commentary, political argument, and crude woodblock images—were common in seventeenth-century Dutch publishing. They reached wide audiences and functioned as verbal-visual propaganda, precursors to the political cartoon tradition. The format anticipates later Bilderbogen sheets and the fusion of word and image that would define satirical print culture through Hogarth, Gillray, and beyond.
