Parallel Account of the Great and Small Bulwarks in Bohemia and on the Rhine

· 1622

This German woodcut combines bird's-eye views of two fortified cities in circular frames with a ground-level battle scene below, typical of early-17th-century news prints. A crowned figure on the left represents political authority. The composition—mixing multiple perspectives and scales—derives from the Bilderbogen tradition of illustrated broadsheets that brought current events to popular audiences through engraved or woodcut images paired with explanatory verse. This hybrid of visual narrative and printed text established conventions later inherited by sequential comics: the panel-like arrangement, the integration of image and word, and the satirical or propagandistic use of caricature and exaggeration to shape public opinion.
