The Siege of Schans Papenmuts and the Fall of Frederick of the Palatinate

This engraved broadsheet combines bird's-eye military cartography with satirical narrative to document a crucial moment in the Thirty Years' War. Two circular vignettes frame panoramic views of Prague and another fortified city, while the lower register depicts siege warfare, fortifications, and troop movements rendered in precise linear perspective. The text—in Dutch, French, and German—provides both eyewitness account and political commentary on Protestant defeat and Catholic victory.

Such composite prints—part map, part history, part propaganda—were standard in early-modern broadsheet culture. Like the picture-sheets that would later influence caricature traditions, these layered images combined text and image to shape public opinion during conflicts, prefiguring how sequential visual narrative would eventually define the comic form.
