This German woodcut satirizes the competing claims of Pfalzgraf Wolfgang Wilhelm and Leopold over the Duchy of Jülich during the War of the Jülich Succession. The print crowds the composition with labeled figures engaged in various activities—feasting, fighting, building, worshiping—each representing political factions and their ambitions. Inscribed Latin numerals and German text below identify the players and their schemes. Such elaborate allegorical engravings descended from the Bilderbogen tradition and prefigure the densely packed narrative panels of later comic art. The work combines satire with pedagogical intent: viewers could decode contemporary politics through visual wit and symbolic costume.
