O Maître el Relicario

· 1920

This hand-colored pochoir print from Gazette du Bon Ton depicts three musicians—a woman in an evening gown trimmed with ribbon, a violinist, and a cellist. The work descends from the 18th- and 19th-century tradition of social and political caricature—Hogarth, Gillray, Daumier—which employed exaggerated physiognomy to satirize class and profession. Here, the artist targets both musical performers and fashionable society through distorted features and theatrical poses. Such prints bridged fine art satire and popular visual culture, establishing visual comedy conventions later adopted by early comic strips and graphic narratives.
