Les Neiges (Snow Sports)

· 1920

This hand-colored woodcut from Gazette du Bon Ton depicts winter sports fashion by designer Rodier, rendered in bold Art Deco style. A figure in white "agnella" (lamb's wool) with orange trim poses against an icy landscape, icicles hanging overhead. The stark black-and-white composition with orange accents typifies the woodcut aesthetic revived in early twentieth-century fashion illustration.

Fashion magazines of this period descended from the caricature and satirical print traditions of Hogarth and Daumier, transforming social observation into commercial display. Rather than mocking subjects, these illustrated pages celebrated consumption and modernity, yet maintained the woodcut's graphic directness—the same medium that had powered centuries of political satire now sold luxury goods to an elite readership.
