Le Chéf de la Grande Nation dans une Triste Position

· 1814

This hand-colored etching satirizes Napoleon's military collapse during the War of the Sixth Coalition. Allied generals—depicted as caricatured soldiers in exaggerated uniforms—surround a wild-haired, diminished French leader wielding a sword against a giant extinguishing bell labeled "L'Éteignoir des Alliés" (The Allies' Snuffer). The composition draws from the Gillray-Rowlandson tradition of political caricature, using grotesque physiognomy and theatrical staging to mock Napoleon's pretensions. Canniballs and military debris litter the ground. Speech balloons carry taunting French text. This print exemplifies how European satirists used exaggerated national and ethnic features—the caricatured faces and uniforms—to ridicule political enemies during the Napoleonic Wars. Such imagery descended directly from eighteenth-century print satire and anticipated the comic narrative traditions of the nineteenth century.
