The print descends directly from the 18th-century tradition of sequential satirical narrative established by Hogarth and Rowlandson, wherein multiple vignettes unfold a moral or social story. Here, the target is the bumbling student—a stock figure of European popular humor. The wood-engraved technique allowed affordable mass production for student almanacs. Each scene pairs image with Dutch verse commentary, anchoring the visual joke in language.
