Order of Sotherly

This Dutch lithographic satire depicts a hierarchical fantasy of student life, with scenes of academic pursuits, revelry, and moral chaos arranged around a central figure bathed in ethereal light. The composition draws on the German Bilderbogen tradition—popular picture-sheets combining multiple narrative vignettes with decorative typography. Owls, monkeys, and demons populate the margins, embodying traditional symbols of folly and disorder. The print reflects 19th-century satirical practice inherited from Hogarth and Rowlandson: social commentary through accumulated detail, grotesque physiognomy, and allegorical animals. The work mocks student culture's pretensions. This broadsheet tradition directly preceded the sequential panels and recurring characters of modern comics.
