This wood engraving from a Leiden student almanac presents a series of social vignettes: a horse study, public execution, domestic scenes, scholarly work, and character types. The composition descends from the Bilderbogen tradition—narrative picture-sheets that arranged multiple scenes to satirize contemporary society, politics, and manners. Such almanac illustrations, following conventions established by Hogarth and developed through Gillray and Rowlandson, combined humor with social commentary. These sequential images pioneered the visual language—multiple frames, exaggerated features, narrative flow—that would evolve into modern comic strips.
