De kladpapieren wereld in brand [The Paper World on Fire]

· 1720

This Dutch engraving depicts a chaotic scene of financial speculation and social disorder during the South Sea Bubble crisis. A large oval composition shows crowds, flying figures, and architectural elements surrounding a central marketplace in turmoil. Ornamental cartouches frame Dutch verses explaining the satire. The print exemplifies early 18th-century political satire's use of allegorical chaos and layered narrative panels—a format that prefigures the sequential storytelling of later comic broadsheets. Angels and demons swirl overhead while merchants and common folk jostle below, their exaggerated poses and dress marking class and profession. Such densely illustrated moral commentary, combining engraving technique with text and multiple scenes, established the visual language that would evolve through Hogarth's narrative sequences and eventually into the panel-driven structure of modern comics.
