Op- en Ondergang van de Actionisten (Rise and Fall of the Stock Jobbers)

· 1720

This Dutch engraving satirizes the collapse of speculative trading during the early 18th-century financial bubble. The composition orchestrates multiple scenes—a crowded marketplace at center, ships and riverside commerce at top, and allegorical vignettes—around a central narrative of financial ruin. The print employs the visual language of Northern European satirical engraving: dense narrative panels, classical medallions, and marginal commentary directing viewer interpretation. Rather than caricaturing individuals, the artist ridicules collective greed and the machinery of speculation itself. This work exemplifies how printmakers used complex, multi-panel compositions to moralize about commerce and class—a tradition linking Renaissance broadsheets to Hogarth's narrative sequences and eventually to sequential comic narrative.
