This is not a cartoon or caricature. The image shows a pressed and mounted botanical specimen — a dried plant with elongated scorpioid flower spikes and lanceolate leaves, taped to archival paper and labeled as an ISO Type Specimen of Heliotropium salicioides Cham., collected in May 1840 from a location noted as between two geographic points (partially legible).
