Hypericum pratense Schltdl. & Cham.

· Collected 1882

This is a pressed herbarium specimen of Hypericum pratense (Schlectendal & Chamisso), a St. John's Wort native to Mexico, mounted on archival paper with multiple handwritten and printed collector labels. The dried stems bear small opposite leaves and the remains of flower buds characteristic of the genus. Labels identify it as part of the Plantae Mexicanae series, with a State of Vera Cruz locality notation. This is a botanical specimen, not a cartoon or caricature, and has no connection to the print-satire tradition of Hogarth, Gillray, or Daumier. A wall label cannot responsibly be written assigning it satirical, political, or caricature content it does not possess.
