Sagittaria montevidensis Cham. & Schltdl.

This is a herbarium specimen sheet, not a political cartoon or caricature. It shows two pressed and dried aquatic plants — a taller specimen with broad ovate leaves and a smaller companion — mounted on archival paper. Labels identify it as Sagittaria montevidensis subsp. calycina, collected from a saline pond near Kimmswick, Jefferson County, Missouri, by George Engelmann, M.D., in fall 1858. A 1962 annotation by Clifford Bogin (New York Botanical Garden) designates it an isotype of S. depauperatus. Color-calibration swatches and a Natural History Museum scale bar are visible. This specimen belongs to botanical science history, not the print-satire tradition.
