Satire på underofficer Sigvard Lycke

34148_person · 1787

This Scandinavian etching depicts the public execution or punishment of a military subordinate officer, surrounded by soldiers, officials, and onlookers. The condemned figure stands elevated on a platform, chained to a post, while figures in 18th-century dress—some in military uniform, others in civilian clothes including women—observe the spectacle. The print belongs to a widespread European tradition of political and social satire that flourished from Hogarth through Gillray, using exaggerated figures and moralistic scenes to mock public figures and critique authority. Such satirical engravings circulated as single sheets, often anonymously, reaching broad audiences and establishing conventions later inherited by cartooning and comics: sequential narrative, caricatured physiognomy, and the marriage of image and text to expose folly and corruption.
