From Daumier's Les Baigneurs lithograph series, this plate depicts a public bathhouse scene on the Seine: a heavyset attendant strains to haul a lean, grimacing bather up a wooden ramp while well-dressed observers look on from the background. Bodies are exaggerated to the point of grotesque. Daumier's lithographic line, produced for mass reproduction in the illustrated press, sits precisely at the hinge between the Gillray–Rowlandson tradition of hand-etched political satire and the sequentially arranged comic strip — the recurring cast, numbered plates, and speech-caption format directly anticipate what Töpffer was simultaneously codifying as the graphic novel's grammar.
