Maudit propriétaire..., tu seras donc cause

#Honoré_Daumier_Künstler_in · 1859

A disheveled, wild-haired man — the archetypal struggling artist — stands amid unsold canvases leaning against gallery walls, his posture one of theatrical despair. The lithograph, almost certainly from Daumier's long collaboration with Le Charivari, targets the Salon system and the landlord who, the caption implies, will be the ruin of the tenant-painter unable to sell his work. Daumier's crayon lithography gives the figure rubbery, exaggerated limbs and a grimacing face — class caricature deployed sympathetically here, mocking bourgeois economics rather than the poor. This work sits squarely in the Franco-British print-satire lineage — Gillray's grotesques, Rowlandson's social comedies — that taught sequential artists how a single image could carry compressed narrative, character, and punchline simultaneously.
