George Cruikshank's wood-engraved illustration depicts a violent struggle in a churchyard at night: a coffin rests open on the ground while a knot of men in 18th-century dress grapple and shove around it, a church tower with weather vane looming behind them and horrified onlookers — women in caps, a clergyman — pressed to the margins. The scene illustrates William Harrison Ainsworth's romanticized outlaw novel, whose working-class criminal hero troubled Victorian moralists. Cruikshank, heir to Gillray and Rowlandson, uses cross-hatched shadow and crowd compression to generate theatrical menace. His sequential picture cycles — The Bottle, The Drunkard's Children — are direct ancestors of the narrative comic strip, making him a pivotal figure between Hogarth's moral print series and the panel-by-panel storytelling that became the comic book.
