Scene from Guy Mannering

Steel engraving by George Cruikshank (1792–1878) illustrating a comic chase scene from Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering (1815). A ragged, wild-haired figure — rendered with the exaggerated physiognomy Cruikshank inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson — scrambles from a ditch, arms flailing, while two women and a child recoil against a tree. The class and ethnic distortion is deliberate: the figure reads as rural poor or possibly Romani, treated as comic threat. Cruikshank's fine cross-hatching and confident figure draftsmanship demonstrate why his sequential illustration work — later including Oliver Twist — stands directly in the lineage connecting 18th-century print satire to the narrative page layouts that would define the comic strip within decades.
