George Elbert Burr's transfer drawing demonstrates the preparatory techniques behind fine printmaking in the early twentieth century. The composition features gnarled cedars set against distant mountains, rendered in ink and wash with precise botanical detail combined with atmospheric recession. Burr, an etcher and landscape artist based in the American Southwest, used such drawings as working designs for his etchings and engravings. The combination of linear definition in the foreground vegetation with graduated tonal shading in the distant peaks shows the artist's method of translating observed landscape into the technical demands of the printing plate.
