Untitled (Cattails, Clover, and Blackberries)

George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1889

This pencil study by George Elbert Burr documents three distinct plant specimens with botanical precision. On the left, cattails display characteristic cylindrical seed heads and elongated leaves. Center studies show clover flowers at various stages of bloom, rendered with delicate linework. Upper right features a blackberry branch laden with ripe fruit and textured foliage. Burr, an Ohio-born artist who would become known for landscape work, here demonstrates the observational drawing practice fundamental to nineteenth-century artistic training. Such studies preceded finished works and reflected both scientific interest in natural forms and the graphic disciplines that shaped visual representation across media during this period.
