Caub on the Rhine from Below

George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, OH 1859-died Phoenix, AZ 1939 · 1900

George Elbert Burr's pen-and-ink sketch captures a Rhine valley town viewed from the foreground, with vineyards and riverside vegetation framing the distant settlement. Mountains rise behind the clustered buildings and church spires. Burr, an accomplished printmaker and landscape artist, worked primarily in etchings and drawings rather than comic strips. This sketch demonstrates the observational line work and atmospheric perspective that characterized turn-of-the-century American landscape art, predating his later recognition as a master of the printed line.
