Scratching Birds

L. Prang & Company's educational print presents eight repetitions of ornithological studies organized in a grid format. Each section depicts ground-feeding birds—wild turkeys, peacocks, pheasants, and grouse—rendered in naturalistic color with anatomical detail. Below each bird appear magnified studies of beaks and claws, the visual grammar of scientific illustration. The repeating layout and dashed lines between sections indicate this was a sheet meant to be divided and distributed separately, characteristic of nineteenth-century chromolithographic production. Such instructional prints populated schools and homes, making Prang's chromolithography process a technology for mass-producing educational imagery before the modern comic strip emerged.
