The Song of Hiawatha Op. 30

Novello & Company · 1900

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's operatic trilogy, published by Novello & Company, set Longfellow's 1855 poem to music across three cantatas: Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, The Death of Minnehaha, and Hiawatha's Departure. Coleridge-Taylor, a celebrated Anglo-African composer, created one of the era's most performed choral works. The 1898–1900 cycle drew on depictions of Native American life from Victorian literature. Hiawatha's Wedding Feast achieved particular renown in concert halls across Britain and America, establishing Coleridge-Taylor as a major figure in late Romantic composition.
