Mount Starr King and Glacier Point, Yosemite

Carleton E. Watkins, American, 1829 – 1916 · 1861

Carleton E. Watkins' photograph captures Yosemite Valley's dramatic geology with characteristic precision. The monumental cliff face rises beyond a serpentine river, coniferous forest, and rocky beach—rendered in platinum-print tones that emphasize tonal gradation from shadow to light. Watkins' large-format camera work, pioneering wet-plate collodion technique, established landscape photography as documentary art. His Yosemite series (1861 onward) circulated as albumen prints and stereoviews, shaping 19th-century American visual culture and scientific understanding of the West. The methodical composition—foreground water, middle-ground vegetation, distant monolith—became the visual template for Western landscape representation.
