Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts a bustling roadside shop along Japan's famous Tokaido highway. The composition centers on a massive tree anchoring the composition, with yellow-roofed merchant stalls flanking either side. Travelers—some on foot, others with pack animals—move through the street in everyday commerce and passage. Mountains recede in the background beneath a pale sky. The print demonstrates Hiroshige's mastery of perspective, spatial depth, and atmospheric color gradation. Part of his monumental Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series, this work documents the vital commercial and social networks of mid-Edo Japan while establishing conventions of landscape representation that influenced Western artists throughout the nineteenth century.
