Okitsu from the series 53 Stations of the Tokaido

Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print depicts travelers and laborers at the coastal station of Okitsu along Japan's major trade route. Yellow rocky outcrops frame figures wading and loading cargo in shallow waters, while a forested mountain rises beyond. The composition uses Hiroshige's characteristic palette and spatial recession to record daily commerce and movement. Part of his celebrated 53 Stations series, these prints documented the Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto, establishing a template for landscape sequences that influenced Western artists and the visual conventions of modern narrative illustration.
