Chair Frame Designs

These two chair designs demonstrate the furniture craftsman's approach to structural form and decorative detail in the mid-19th century. The left example presents a neoclassical oval-backed chair with fluted legs and minimal ornamentation, while the right shows a rococo-influenced frame with carved supports featuring sculptural human figures and elaborate scrollwork. Both drawings use the engraver's line technique to convey three-dimensional form and material weight. Such technical illustrations served as working references for cabinetmakers and upholsterers, establishing proportional systems and stylistic vocabularies that defined domestic interiors across the period.
